Surge Globally in Social Networking Usage

By Adrian
Heres a great article from Mashable highlighting the amount of time people actually spend on social networking sites.

We apparently spend up to 6 hours a month on social networking sites. However I believe these numbers could even be higher. Think about it, we generally spend more time on the Internet than in front of our television sets and much of our time on the Internet is spent on social networking sites.

"Active unique users of social networks are also up nearly 30% globally, rising from 244.2 million to 314.5 million collectively."

Mother and Son Reunion

By Adrian
In the long, cold winter of 1963, 17 year old Mary Husted gave birth to her son, Luke. She kept her baby for just ten days, before giving him up for adoption. During that time she drew sketches of him in pencil. Twenty years later Mary studied art and became a fine artist, with the memory of the child she had given away always influencing her work. Then in 2007, Mary was traced by Luke through these sketches. Mary joins Jane to talk about the exhibition “Hush Don’t Tell,” which tells their story.

Hush Don’t Tell runs from 29 August to 25 September at the Temporary Exhibition Space, New Hall Art Collection, Murray Edwards College.

It is part of Open Cambridge, a programme of talks and tours from 10-12 September. Collections, treasures and buildings throughout Cambridge are open to the public.

Mary Husted was recently interviewed for an article in Green Pebble, talking about the inspiration behind her current works in anticipation of this exhibition. A pdf file of this article can be viewed here.

An apt analogy?

By Kev Moore
As some of you on here know, my primary artistic pursuit is that of a musician, and to that end I am currently entering the mixing phase of my forthcoming album "Blue Odyssey".  After working on many projects with Miki over the years, I've really come to view the creation of new music as 'painting with sound' - particularly when it comes to mixing a track and placing each sound, each instrument, in its proper place. It is very much like the composition of a painting. One element misplaced, and it strikes dischord, disharmony, and offends the ear (or the eye).

I truly believe that observing the creation of paintings firsthand many times over through Miki has informed the way I approach my own work, giving me a greater appreciation of how to create 'the whole'.   It helps me to step back, and perhaps view the piece differently. This is something musicians (and perhaps artists, too) find very difficult, particularly when you are recording a solo album, and every part recorded, every decision made, is down to you. It becomes increasingly more difficult to take a detached view, so close to your creation do you become. Yet it is a necessary evil.

Perhaps even the act of standing back from a painting, seeing how the light falls on it, how it looks from afar, is a great trigger for the mind when it comes to music, for that is how I picture myself when I mentally take a step back from my composition. An apt analogy? -perhaps, but for me certainly a useful one.

Preffered medium ?

By Jean
Preferred medium - Which is yours and which did you start with?

I started painting in the wet on wet method in oils by watching the late bob Ross on TV
Yes I know,  there are a lot of artists who scoff at the very mention of the man but the point is that's where (to use an Americanism) my art journey started.
I have since painted in acrylic and watercolour and now very rarely use the wet on wet method in oils.
I have the greatest respect for watercolourists as I think this is the hardest to control..but once mastered the results are breathtaking !
Just looking at Vijay, Oscar, Lucia's and the other excellent watercolourists on this site alone, makes me wonder if I would have watched Charles Evans that day on TV instead of Bob Ross, maybe I could have been a watercolourists by now !
I suppose my question is does anyone else feel/wish they had started in another medium?  and do you think it is best to choose a medium and stick with it or to paint with all mediums?
